In the smaller data center, an iSCSI only strategy is typically more cost effective and desirable. However, iSCSI should be considered by medium and large size data centers, to develop a tiered access strategy. Tiered Access to Storage allows servers to access consolidated storage at a performance level and price point that makes sense for a specific server, the applications on that server and the storage attached to the storage infrastructure. Tiered Storage Access or Data/Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) fits best in the medium to large size data center.
