When used with the Cisco? MDS 9000 IP Storage Services module, the Cisco MDS 9000 SAN Extension over IP package provides an integrated, cost effective, and reliable business continuance solution that uses the customers? existing IP infrastructure. Following are the features included in this package:
- Integrated support for FCIP Protocol?Cisco MDS 9500 multilayer directors and Cisco MDS 9216 multilayer fabric switches provide integrated support for Fibre Channel Interface Protocol (FCIP) that can be used to connect Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs) across a distance using IP networks. Each Gigabit Ethernet port on the Cisco IP Storage Services module is capable of handling up to three FCIP tunnels. Each 8-port IP storage services module supports 24 simultaneous FCIP tunnels. Currently, to get the functionality provided by the SAN Extension over IP package, customers are required to have multiple systems from different vendors.
The Cisco FCIP implementation is completely integrated with value-added features on the Cisco MDS 9000 Series switches. The Cisco virtual SAN (VSAN) functionality is supported across FCIP links between SANs. When used in conjunction with the Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise package, FCIP can be used with features such as Inter-VSAN Routing and Quality of Service (QoS) for resiliently connecting SANs over aWAN. Use of Virtual Routing Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) increases IP network availability for FCIP connections to IP Storage Services modules by enabling failover of connections from one module to another. Load balancing using PortChannels can also be performed over FCIP links. Cisco SAN-OS implementation of FCIP on the Cisco MDS switches is optimized for wire performance through enhancements that address out-of-order delivery issues, support jumbo frames, provide traffic shaping, and perform TCP optimization. - FCIP compression?FCIP compression in the Cisco SAN-OS increases the effective WAN bandwidth without costly infrastructure upgrades. By integrating data compression in the IP Storage Services module, more efficient FCIP-based business continuity and disaster recovery solutions can be implemented, without adding and managing a separate device. Each Gigabit Ethernet port on the IP Storage Services module has its own compression engine. The Lempel-Zif-Stac (LZS) algorithm used for compression typically achieves a 2:1 compression ratio over a wide variety of data sources, delivering a data rate of up to 100 Mbps compressed (up to 200 Mbps uncompressed) per Gigabit Ethernet port on IP Storage Services modules.
- FCIPWrite Acceleration? The Cisco SAN-OS FCIPWrite Acceleration feature ignificantly improves application performance when storage traffic is routed overWANs using FCIP. When FCIPWrite Acceleration is enabled,WAN throughput is maximized, and write I/O latency is decreased by minimizing the impact of WAN latencies for the command/transfer ready acknowledgement. The Cisco MDS 9000 SAN Extension over IP package can be used with Cisco MDS 9500 multilayer directors and Cisco MDS 9216 multilayer fabric switches.
